Abstract:

Includes many early 20th-century commercial postcard views of Bethlehem, Jerusalem and other regions of the Holy Land, as well as portraits of jews and Jewish types from Palestine. Also includes commercial stereograph views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tiberias, Mt. Sinai, Mt. Carmel and other locations in the Holy Land. Other stereograph views include Temple Emmanuel in San Francisco, and Yosemite Valley (all taken by Carleton Watkins). Also Includes two carte de visite portraits of unidentified women, two group portraits of San Francisco school pupils from the 1890s, a studio portrait of Mr. L.A. Ross, a photograph of Temple Sinai in Oakland, Calif., and a snapshot of a group of sightseers posing on a Mt. Tamalpais gravity car.

Seymour Fromer served as the first executive director of the Judah L. Magnes Museum, which he co-founded with his wife, Rebecca, in 1962. In addition to his work at the Judah L. Magnes Museum, he also served as the director of the Jewish Education Council of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and was involved with various other Jewish organizations.
